| Why
did the power go out? |
The
police department cannot do anything
about a power outage.
Generally, you will know as much as
we do about why the power is out.
It is important that you call the
Progress Energy Power Out Line
1-800-419-6356 and let them know
your residence or business is out.
Calling the police department only
ties up our lines for other
emergencies. |
| I
need to get a warrant or a
“restraining” order. Where
do I go? |
All
criminal warrants and domestic
violence protective orders
(“restraining orders) must be
obtained from the Granville County
Magistrates Office located on
Williamsboro St. adjacent to the
Granville County Jail.
No warrants are issued at the police
department. |
| How
much is my bond? |
If
there is an outstanding warrant for
you, the police department does not
know what your bond is. That
information must come from the
Granville County Magistrates office
where the warrant was issued.
If you are arrested by a police
officer they will take you to the
magistrates office for bond
information unless you are released
on a summons. |
| I
have a question about a traffic
ticket I got? |
If
you desire to speak to the officer
who issued the ticket, the
dispatcher will advise him/her to
call you if they are on duty or they
will take a message and have the
officer call you back. You may
also access the officers e-mail on
this website and leave him/her a
message. |
| How
can I make a complaint on an officer
or commend an officer for a job well
done? |
If
you desire to file a complaint
regarding an officer action, you
will need to either call or come by
the police department and request to
speak with a “Supervisor”.
The supervisor will take your
written complaint on the form
provided and you may be asked to
write out a statement. If you
choose to just talk over the issue
with the supervisor that will also
be acceptable and we will try and
come up with an equitable solution
to your complaint. If a written
complaint is filed, you will be
receiving a reply to that complaint
generally within ten (10) days in
writing or by telephone. If you wish
to commend an officer, you can
follow the same procedure by calling
the supervisor on duty, leaving an
e-mail to the Chief of Police
accessing his e-mail address on this
site or calling or writing a letter
to the Office of the Chief of
Police. |
| If
I give you a license tag number, can
you tell me who owns the car? |
The
police department is not authorized
to give out any information relative
to vehicle registration or drivers
license information to anyone other
than another law enforcement agency. |
| Will
the Police Department come out an
unlock my car for me? |
The
police department no longer has the
tools necessary to unlock cars.
We refer you to local locksmiths.
The only exception is when a child
is left in a locked vehicle during
hot weather and no key is available.
We will then attempt to unlock the
car using any method we can to
include breaking out a window if
necessary. |
| Can
you tell me if the streets are in
good condition due to snow and ice? |
The
police department discourages people
from calling the police department
lines with questions about weather.
If weather conditions are severe,
our emergency lines are usually full
of emergency related calls and our
dispatchers simply cannot field
calls that are asking them for
“weather advisories”. We
simply encourage people to listen to
your TV and radio news for those
reports. |
| People
are gathering up on my property at
all times of the day or night and I
don’t want them there. What
can I do? |
You
may contact the Police Department
and fill out the necessary form
called a Trespassing Agreement,
which allows the department to post
a No Trespassing Sign on your
property and arrest any persons who
are on your property who are
unauthorized. |
| I
am afraid of my boyfriend. He
has assaulted me and I want him out
of my house and away from my
children. What can I do? |
If
an assault occurs, you should call
the police department as soon as you
safely can and officers will respond
to help you. They may arrest
the person who committed the assault
if they are present and conditions
warrant an arrest or attempt to
locate him/her if they have left.
In addition, if you need further
information about your rights and
need support for ongoing domestic
violence issues you should call the
24 Hour Domestic Violence
Crisis/Support Line
919-693-2324. (Families Living
Violence Free) They have the
resources to help you. |
